UK Housebuilding Completions by Region 2019-2023
There was 209,710 new homes built in 2022-2023 according to the Office of National Statistics. There was a temporary decline in housebuilding during the pandemic, when less than 180,000 new homes were built. But the 2022-2023 number is comparable to the 2019-2020 new houses count of 209,270.
In July 2023, NHBC reported that number of new home registrations fell by 42% in Q2 2023 compared to the same period last year, with completions falling by 11%. A total of 38,044 new homes were completed in the months of Q2 2023, compared to 65,645 in Q2 2022.
The East of England and London displayed the highest growth year to year in housing completions, with growth of 16.8% and 17.8% respectively. The North West and Northern Ireland were the regions with completion declines over the last year, with falls of 17.2% and 11.9% respectively.
